Slowly but surely I do believe we are on the verge of become a health conscious society. We’re more aware that dieting and fad diets are not the way forward and are some what a thing of the past. There would seem to be very few diets on the market, which promote healthy eating and unfortunately, the majority of diets out there encourage us to severely restrict our calorie in take and base their success rates on the number of people who lose merely retained water or muscle tissue instead of actual fat. With this in mind it would seem more important, perhaps now more than ever, to watch what we’re putting in our mouths and adopt a healthy way of eating as opposed to a continual pattern of yo-yo dieting! But if we’re going to make a positive change to our lifestyles and our eating patterns then surely we need to know what constitutes healthy eating? How do we know we are eating the right foods? And ultimately how can we ensure we take an active approach to eating healthily? Over recent months supermarket food labelling has changed and adopted a new ‘traffic light’ system when it comes to labelling packaged food products. Take a look around the shelves of most supermarkets today and you’ll find more nutritional information on the front of packaging than there has been in the past. However, watch out, some products will show you the nutritional information for say 100g although the entire product may in fact be 500g therefore the information on the front of the packaging is only showing the consumer 1/5 of the fat, calorie and salt content! Having said that, today more consumers are aware of buying organic produce and free range products so perhaps, subconsciously we are already aware of the need to eat healthy and we are already taking an active approach towards a healthy lifestyle. Of course there are plenty of small changes we can make which will instantly have a positive affect on our bodies and promote a healthier way of eating. So, if dieting just ‘ain’t your thing’ watch this space and we’ll bring you plenty of ideas, hints and tips to kick start your healthy eating plan. diets
