The Grapefruit Diet was the fad diet of the 1970 and its popularity continued into the 80’s. The diet saw people becoming obsessed with the so called ‘fat burning’ grapefruit. On the whole, the grapefruit diet provides no more than a mere 800 calories per day and dieters who have braved eating copious amount of the sour fruit have allegedly lost up 3 stone in only 12 weeks!
Although the Grapefruit Diet has been dismissed as yet another fad diet, in 2004 a study led by Dr. Ken Fujioka at the Nutrition and Metabolic Research Center at Scripps Clinic found that eating half a grapefruit with each meal or drinking a glass of grapefruit juice did in fact encourage weight loss. Those who participated in the experiment lost, on average 3.5 lbs over a 12 week period.
Researchers believe that grapefruit has the ability to control insulin levels, which in turn promotes a level of weight loss.
